The dining table is where families eat, talk, do homework and celebrate. Too small and everyone feels crowded; too big and you can't walk around it. Here's how to get it right.
The two rules that matter most
- 24 inches per person: each seat needs about 24 inches of table edge to eat comfortably.
- 36 inches of clearance: leave at least 36 inches between the table and the wall or other furniture so chairs can slide back and people can walk behind them.
Quick formula: take your room's length and width and subtract 6 feet (36" on each side). What's left is the biggest table that fits.
Table size chart
| Seats | Rectangular | Round | Minimum room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 48" long | 36"–44" | 9' × 9' |
| 6 | 60"–72" long | 48"–54" | 10' × 12' |
| 8 | 78"–96" long | 60"–72" | 12' × 14' |
Which shape is right for you?
- Rectangular: the classic choice for 6–8 people and long rooms.
- Round: great for small spaces and conversation; no corners to bump into.
- Counter height: a casual look that works well with open kitchens.
- Extension leaf: perfect if you host big family dinners only a few times a year.
